We are delighted that you have joined or rejoined Wargrave Tennis Club for another season (or for the remaining months of the season if you have joined us late). Our objective as a Club is to promote the game of tennis in Wargrave and the surrounding area; by encouraging and supporting more players, of all ages and abilities, to play better competitive or social tennis; in an environment that is fun, safe and inclusive.
We believe in treating all members alike, regardless of age, gender or ability. We make every effort to maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and we want our members to feel that it is ‘their Club’. Our committee of volunteers are always willing to listen to your suggestions, and we always appreciate any help that would improve how the Club is run, or the facilities that we offer.
When you become a member of Wargrave Tennis Club you agree to follow the Club’s General Rules and Code of Conduct, the rules set out in our constitution, together with specific policies of the Club or relevant policies from the Lawn Tennis Association. Established in 1910, we are a friendly Club that promotes tennis for all standards and ages, in an environment that is fun, safe and inclusive. We currently have over 340 members, although the committee is working on plans to grow membership to over 400 in the next 2-3 years (250+ adults and 150+ juniors). We have 8 high-quality all-weather courts, with 2 artificial clay courts installed in 2024 and advanced LED floodlighting installed in 2022. We will endeavour to make further improvements in the Club’s facilities while ensuring that our exisiting courts and facilities are kept in the best condition possible. We will also main maintain fees for our members that are competitive and in line with other clubs that have similar facilities.
The current clubhouse was rebuilt in 2010 and provides members with toilets and a kitchen area for hot and cold drinks. All members are also allowed to use the bar and facilities at our neighbouring cricket club (when it is open), but please respect their rules. Members can park their cars for free in the main carpark or in the overflow parking behind the clubhouse…although we do encourage members who live locally to walk or come by bike!
To access our clubhouse, please ask the Chair or Membership Secretary to provide you with a code for the key safe (located on the door). This contains a key (on a cord) that you can use to unlock and lock the clubhouse if no one is around. Once in the clubhouse, you can access the cupboard (on right side) that has the keys for the toilet, courts (if locked) and switches for the floodlights.
Please Note – if you are last to leave the Club, please ensure the courts and clubhouse are locked, and that ALL floodlights have been turned off. Put the main key back in the safe and ensure that it is closed.
We currently offer our members five social tennis sessions and two weekly pickleball sessions every week. The Tuesday and Thursday evening tennis sessions are normally managed by one of our committee members to ensure that players rotate so that everyone gets a competitive match, albeit in a friendly atmosphere. To see the latest times for social tennis, please visit https://wargravetennis.com/court-bookings/
In addition to weekly Club Sessions, we hold regular social tournaments. These are open to all members and are designed to be fun and to encourage more competitive play, but for players of all abilities.
Note – Please check your emails or the clubhouse noticeboard for details of upcoming events.
If you want to play competitive tennis, we have a team for you! We regularly enter around 15 teams in the Berkshire and National Leagues with matches played at weekends, and occasionally during the week. To help make life easy, all selections and matches are coordinated by our excellent Team Player APP that was specially developed by one of our members. If you are interested in playing for any of the Club’s teams, please get in touch with one of our captains via our website at https://wargravetennis.com/team-captains/. They will find out more about your aspirations and invite you to a team practice session (every Wednesday evenings from 7pm).
We run an active singles ‘box league’ that is managed through the LTA website. The box league runs on a 6 to 8 week cycle, with around 6 players in each box. We also run an annual Club Tournament in the summer with a finals weekend held in September. To find our more, email competitions@wargravetennis.com.
We have a thriving juniors’ section with over 140 players aged from 4 to 18. We have a busy junior club night every Friday from 4.30pm that is free to all members. Members also get a discount on all coaching with a wide range of term time courses and holiday camps. The Club also runs junior teams at all age groups plus a number of internal tournaments every year plus some fun family tournaments e.g. Bobble Hat Tennis on Boxing Day or our Halloween Competition. For more details on junior tennis, come along to the kids’ night session (during term times) or email or juniors coordinator at juniors@wargravetennis.com.
Members can book individual courts up to 14 days in advance via a link from our court bookings page. Alternatively, members can download a neat APP to their smartphone called ClubSpark Booker. If you want to use the system, you need to be registered to the LTA ClubSpark. Please note, you don’t need to book a court when the courts are not busy (or booked by anyone else) or for official Club sessions, coaching or Club matches. Visit court booking rules to understand the priority for court allocations.
Ollie Brown is the Head Coach at Wargrave Tennis Club. Ollie and his team offer members and non-members a range of group coaching, holiday camps and private lessons for children and adults of all abilities. Please visit the coaching page on the Club website to see more details and to book your place on a coaching course, a holiday camp or for a private lesson.
