As part of the Wargrave Village Festival, Wargrave Tennis Club recently hosted a successful open day featuring a fun padel and pickleball competition for non-members. A total of 32 competitors took part, with players split into two groups of 16 (eight pairs in each group). Throughout the morning, each pair played four padel matches and four pickleball matches against opponents within their group, creating a busy schedule of friendly but competitive action.

After the group stages, the top two pairs from each group progressed to the padel grand semi-finals, followed by a final and a third-place play-off. The standard of play was impressive, and spectators enjoyed some closely contested matches. The overall winners were Christine Clark and Josh Parkinson from Wokingham, who put in an excellent performance throughout the day. Runners-up were Matt Hunt from Wargrave and his nephew, Oliver Macmullen, from London, who also enjoyed a strong run to the final.

The event highlighted two of the fastest-growing racket sports in the world. Both pickleball and padel are available at Wargrave Tennis Club, which now boasts three pickleball courts that members can book free of charge, as well as two new padel courts available to hire from just £10 per hour (£2.50 per member when four players share a court). Visitors were also able to enjoy free tennis coaching with Head Coach Ollie Brown, view the Club’s newest facilities, and learn more about exciting plans for clubhouse extensions later this summer.
