Wargrave Named Berkshire Tennis Club of the Year 2025 🏆

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Wargrave Tennis Club has recently received the award as Berkshire Tennis Club of the Year for 2025, and we have also been shortlisted as an LTA Club of the Year National Finalist for 2026.

The Berkshire Tennis Club of the Year award was formally presented at the Berkshire Tennis AGM on Thursday 26 February at Cantley House Hotel, with the following citation from Kim Sedwick, Berkshire LTA Awards Lead:

Located in the heart of the village, Wargrave Tennis Club is a model for grassroots sports, offering a welcoming environment for tennis, padel, and pickleball. By prioritising a community-driven spirit, including pay-and-play access for local residents, Wargrave has seen its membership grow by 60% over the last five years. Their forward-thinking approach and inclusive atmosphere make them a standout representative for our county as they move forward to the LTA National Awards.

This recognition is particularly special as it is based on nominations from our own members, reflecting the strength, inclusivity, and positive atmosphere of the club. More details on how our members feel about the Club can be seen in the great results from our Annual Members Survey, which was run last November.

A Message from the Club Chair, Michael Simpson

“I was incredibly proud to receive this award on behalf of all our members, and it is a huge honour to have been shortlisted as one of five contenders for 2026 National Club of the Year Award. This is fantastic recognition for 4 years of hard work by a team of dedicated volunteers of a community based tennis club.

Since 2021, the Club has undergone significant change — including the installation of new LED floodlights; revisions to our constitution to encourage greater membership engagement; updates to our website; appointment of a new coaching provider; a move to artificial clay tennis courts; and the introduction of both pickleball and padel. These developments have helped transform the club and broaden our appeal within the local community.

As a result, membership has grown by nearly 70% since 2021, including a 40% increase in 2025 alone, with more than 200 new members joining the club since January last year. This award belongs to everyone who has contributed to that journey — particularly our members, who have supported and embraced the changes we have made. I am also incredibly grateful to our Parish Council for their continued support throughout this period.

Looking ahead, we have exciting plans for 2026, including proposals for a second padel court and extensions to our clubhouse to better meet the needs of our growing membership.”
